Super Bowl Sunday

I am getting things ready for the super bowl.  I will be building a nice fire for tonight.  My computer is ready with the tv tuner I have and I will hook it up to the cable for the game.  Menu will be Buffalo chicken strips that I will cook outside by the fire as I partake of a brew or two.  We also have veggies and dip along with Tostito chips and salsa.  I did this last year too and got a few strange looks and a few visitors to see what I was up to.  I expect the same reaction again this year.   It is really great to be able to watch the game by the fire while consuming mass quantities of junk food and liquid refreshments.  I'll take a few pics tonight and post them if they come out ok.

Birds

We took a little ride yesterday looking for the rookery in this picture. After a lot of walking we found an ampitheater that hasn't been used in a while. We then walked all the way around the theater and found this pond and rookery. There were a lot of birds, roseate spoonbills (the bill is really like the pictures!)), snowy egrets, blue herons, ibis and a few others I am not sure of. A little bit behind the pond is a golf course; we could see people playing.
The other day we also saw wood storks near the historic area. This spot is right off the road.

Whew!!

The winter storm hitting the middle east is really something!  I wonder what D.C. will do with 24 inches of snow?  Back home that wouldn't even be a snow event!  The way people drive anywhere outside of NY and PA south makes me really glad I'm not trying to drive home this weekend.  The only thing from this storm for us here is a tiny little bit of rain. I just heard on the Weather Channel that schools in the D.C. area will probably be closed Monday and maybe longer.  What's up with that?  What a bunch of babies!! Two feet of snow probably wouldn't even rate a 2 hour delay up home!

Amelia Island

Amelia Island is also known as the only US location to have been under 8 flags.  It was first settled by the Timucuans, the Native Americans we learned about at Hilton Head and other parts of Georgia.  In 1562 the French arrived followed by the Spanish and the English.  For a short while they were independent and lived under their own flag, then they were under the Flag of Florida, the Mexican Rebel Flag, the confederate flag, and then again under the US flag.
We went to the museum and learned more of the history.  We spent most of the day wandering around the historical area. A stop at the visitor's center gave us an overwhelming amount of information. So we were able to look up all the buildings we were staring at.
We found a brewpub, Karibo's and an Irish Pub, O'Kane's.  (We did a lot of walking in between stops.)

We then drove around Fort Clinch State Park and saw the Amelia Island lighthouse (Florida's oldest lighthouse).  We also saw a deer and an armadillo.

Bob to the Rescue

We went to Amelia Island today (more about that later).  While walking down the street we heard a noise across the street.  An older lady had fallen and hit her head.   There were several people standing around but Bob went over, talked to the lady at the store and confirmed she was calling 911 and then got paper towels from her.  He held the paper towels on the woman's wound (she was bleeding a lot) and kept talking to her and her friend calming them down.  The ambulance got there and they took over and we left.
Bob just knew what to do and did it.  I'm so proud of him!!

Little Stuff

It was another rainy day.  I needed more fabric for my next quilt so we went back to the Stepping Stones quilt shop on St. Simons Island.  Would you believe they didn't have any flannel?!!  But she did have some more lighthouse fabrics so it was worth the trip.

We went to the Red Bug Pub and Pizza for dinner.  This place was even smaller than the Wee Pub in Brunswick.   They both have fireplaces, the Wee Pub has 7 tables and 3 booths, the Red Bug only has seven tables.  At the Red Bug we met a gentleman, who works for the Jekyll Authority, who advised us on several places to eat, all within an hours drive. Both places have good food and drink.

Everyone we met today was very friendly.

Moving Day

Today, Feb.1st, was moving day for us and many others here at Jekyll Island Campground.  Lots of people make reservations starting the 1st of the month and because reservations are made years ahead those of us new to the system have to be more flexible.  We are now in the middle of the campground and have a new neighborhood to learn.  The people next to us are also from NY (Long Island) and they have a new puppy.
